Title: ICT AND ACADEMIC LIBRARY: STRIVING TOWARDS USERS INFORMATION NEEDS

Abstract: The study examines the extent to which the provisions of computer systems and services at the university of Jos library have encouraged users in patronizing the library_ It is a survey research which uses analysis of records and interview as instruments for data collection. The comparative analysis of the yearly output of number of readers in the library and the yearly output of the library computer laboratory users from 2005 to 2008 were established. The study revealed yearly increase in the number of readers in the library with an average of 99,979 readers per annum. 2008 indicated the highest readers in the library with 135,824 (33.96%) having a surplus of 35,845 users from the mean. The study showed a continuous yearly increase in the number of users that browsed the internet in the laboratory with a continuous decrease in the percentage of the library users who browsed internet in the laboratory because of inadequate desktop computers. It is recommended among other things that enough computers and seating capacity should be provided to augment efforts at meeting users Information needs
