Abstract: Sweitenia mycrophylla gum was chemically modified via carboxymethylation. The product was characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR), Energy Dispersive X-ray (EDX) and Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR). Physicochemical characterization of the native and carboxymethyl gum such as viscosity, solubility and swelling power were also determined. The modified gum with the degree of substitution 0.24 had higher physicochemical properties than the native gum. The result showed that chemical modification via carboxymethylation may improve the viscosity, solubility and swelling power of gum which may result in higher efficacy for effective utilization in gum-based industries.
