Abstract: The genesis of information literacy as a concept is outlined and its development related to an historical framework with the aim of providing a better understanding of the process of developmental and adoption of information literacy ideas. The paper suggests a tentative historical frame work for understanding the emergence of information literacy and its development particularly within the tertiary education system. It also highlights a few works which emphasize the importance of a more individualised approach to the design of information literacy interventions.
